From 1 May 2008, 3% tax will be added to clothes |
Jersey's government has narrowly rejected a petition calling for the new Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the island to be delayed. After debating the issue for two days, 28 members opposed a delay and 23 voted in favour.
Treasury Minister Terry Le Seuer said the vote reflected the concerns of 19,000 residents who petitioned the States looking for an alternative tax.
Petitioner Simon Crowcroft said he was saddened by the decision.
Thousands of people signed the petition calling for GST to be scrapped, which was handed in to the States in September.
The new GST tax will make up any shortfall lost to the government once a new low tax system for businesses comes in.
From 1 May 2008, an extra 3% will be added to most goods and services including clothing and food.
