Implementation of GST uncertain
Shoppers and shop owners may not know how a new sales tax will work in Jersey until the autumn.

The 3% Goods and Services Tax (GST), which is to come into effect in April next year, will include nearly everything sold in the island.

But a decision on how items are price marked has not yet been made.

This issue surrounds whether 3% is added to individual prices or worked out on the basis of the final total on the receipt at the till.

The latter system is favoured by Jersey Chamber of Commerce which is asking islanders to lobby politicians before a scheduled debate in July.

But a scrutiny panel, led by Deputy Geoff Southern, wants to delay the debate until the autumn so it can look at evidence before supporting one side or the other.
