Prices 'should not include tax'
Cash till
A minister says there needs to be certainty over the issue
Jersey's Chamber of Commerce has called for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) not to be included on price labels.

The GST will be introduced in 2008 under a new system and is due to remain at 3% for at least three years.

The Chamber of Commerce says it should be listed separately from the cost of goods, or it will lead to inflationary pricing with costs being rounded up.

Minister for Economic Development Philip Ozouf said inclusive GST would protect consumer interests.

He said: "I do have an obligation to listen to business and safeguard their interest, but I also have a primary overwhelming interest to safeguard the interest of consumers.

"I am very concerned that we might have a situation where we might have some retailers taking one approach where they would display an inclusive price and others not.

"There would be chaos when people would get to the till. Some people would be surprised at having the 3% added and some wouldn't.

"We do need certainty in this issue."
