Row over spending of saved cash
Jersey's chief minister is denying the island's government is being irresponsible by spending money saved by public services efficiencies.

The Council of Ministers has been accused of unnecessarily wasting millions of pounds saved.

The Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel said it was irresponsible not to put some of that aside in case changes to the tax system did not work as planned.

But Chief Minister Frank Walker says spending is under control.

It's not just spend, spend, spend by any stretch of the imagination
Senator Frank Walker

Scrutiny Panel Chairman Patrick Ryan said although the council was cutting spending in some areas, the future was uncertain.

He said: "What we are talking about is the extra spending over and above policies that are very well-received and have been successful.

"We understand where they [the Council of Ministers] are coming from, we are just questioning the prudence of the way they are going about it."

But Senator Frank Walker, said he was not letting spending get out of control.

"It's not just spend, spend, spend by any stretch of the imagination.

"They are controlled expenditure plans based on 20m of savings which we are delivering and we will completely deliver each year after 2008, which seems to be completely overlooked."

The States is due to discuss the island's Strategic Plan this week, mapping out how the government will spend money over the next five years.
