Charity to turn rubbish into cash
A rubbish collection service has started in Jersey that sells items on to be recycled and donates the profits to charities.

Charitable organisation Recycle picks up from homes across the island. Items are then recycled in the UK and the profits reinvested in Jersey charities.

Eighty residents have signed up for the service since it started in December.

Phil Maguire of Recycle said: "Every pound we recycle, we also save the environment. It's a win-win situation."

'Huge opportunity'

The charity has set a target of 500,000 in a year from collecting rubbish. The money will mainly go towards charities based in Jersey.

"We got into this because we wanted to raise more money for charity and realised that recycling was such a huge opportunity to make money," Phil Maguire said.

"We noticed that islanders do give very generously to causes off the island.

"But it was almost as if we do not want to admit that there are people on the island that are needy."

The organisation aims to expand from easily recyclable materials, such as aluminium and printer cartridges to paper, and hopes to eventually do all the recycling on the island.
