Jersey's new Employment Relations Law has been condemned by members of the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) at its UK national conference. An emergency motion was put to members in Blackpool asking them to back a campaign to change the law.
The Employment and Social Security Committee says the new law would help resolve employment disputes quickly and are right for a place of Jersey's size.
But the TGWU said it believed it fell short of international standards.
Critics of the law said it focused on union issues rather than matters such as discrimination, race or redundancy.
A unanimous vote by 800 delegates at the TGWU conference condemned the law on Tuesday.
The Employment Committee said the law was a major step forward and it helped set out conditions for paid holiday, gave protection against unfair dismissal, with the right to go to an employment tribunal.
