The Privileges Committee wants a 'robust draft law' |
People in Jersey may not be able to get information on employment disputes if the States agrees changes to the planned Freedom of Information law. The Privileges and Procedures Committee has set out four areas which it says need more work by Policy and Resources.
They include asking whether information requests should be in writing and if certain areas, including employer and employee relations, should be exempt.
However, the committee said it would stick to the principles of the project.
Easy prosecutions
The Privileges and Procedures Committee is also considering whether to change the scope of offences covered by the law, and penalties people could face if they do not comply with the laws.
The committee said the current wording of the law could lead too easily to a prosecution and that amendments were needed.
In its report to the States about the proposed changes to employer/employee relations information, the committee said that "exemptions should be widened so as to be able to refuse requests for information that would prejudice not only the resolution of a dispute, but also the successful completion of other negotiations."
However, the committee said it wanted to reassure the States "of its continuing commitment to a robust draft law which will still hold to the principles in the original project".
