The new legislation will replace existing laws from 1987 |
Changes to Jersey's proposed data protection law are being called for by an island Deputy. St Helier Deputy Jerry Dorey is asking for greater accountability in the enforcement of the rules.
He is calling for the Data Protection Commissioner to be asked to ensure any decisions he takes are in accordance with published guidelines.
He also wants the law clarified so people caused distress by rule breaches can claim compensation.
'Important legislation'
The island's draft Data Protection Law was lodged with the States on 20 April.
Once in force, the new law will implement the European Directive on Data Protection, which affects the free movement of information and freedom to trade, as well as the freedom of individuals.
The new legislation will replace existing the island's existing data protection law which was passed in 1987.
Finance and Economics Committee Vice President, Senator Philip Ozouf, said: "This is a very big and important piece of legislation.
"It has implications for all businesses and data users and it also provides important safeguards for the use of personal information, which has implications for everyone in the community."
