Work law raises fears on economy
New protection for workers on short term contracts could have a detrimental effect on Jersey businesses according to the Institute of Directors (IoD).

The proposed new employment law gives protection to all workers on a minimum contract of six months. In the UK the law only applies after 12 months.

The IoD says that could mean reduced flexibility and may prevent businesses setting up or expanding.

The Employment and Social Security Committee is standing by the proposals.

It says it will monitor how the new regulations work in practice before making any changes.

The new law is due to come into force on 1 April. The Institute of Directors denies it is motivated by self interest.
