New push to reduce drug addicts
A series of public hearings are to be held into the way Jersey's drug addicts are treated.

A review into drug treatment services was launched three months ago by the States Shadow Scrutiny Panel chaired by Deputy Jerry Dorey.

The panel has so far spoken to addicts at the Alcohol and Drugs Service and La Moye prison as well as to recovering addicts.

Now it is intending to speak to the doctors who provide treatment.

It will also speak to those who co-ordinate the services and the politicians with overall responsibility.

As well as the public hearings, which take place on three consecutive Fridays next month, there will be two confidential sessions, for anyone with direct experience of drugs to contribute.

It is estimated that Jersey has about 800 heroin addicts. The panel's eventual findings will be used to try and reduce that number.
