Profits increase for retail group

Turnover has increased by 11%
The Channel Islands' largest retail group has announced a rise in sales and profits for the first half of 2004.

CI Traders says turnover in its retail businesses has increased by 11% compared to the same period last year.

The Le Riche and Checkers superstores are doing well, but some convenience shops are finding it harder to compete.

Its Marks and Spencer franchise is performing much the same as in the UK with a growth in food sales, but declines elsewhere.

The board has declared no change in the interim dividends because the company is being cautious as its French bottling business recovers from one of its worst trading periods.

It also continues to report a decline in its Jersey pub trade.

But with the recent takeover of the property group Comprop, and Jersey's new St Brelade Checkers store opening in November, the company says it is confident about its future.
