Traffic reversed in town street
Drivers in Jersey are being warned the direction of traffic has been changed on one of St Helier's main roads.

From Monday, traffic has been reversed in Cattle Street, which runs from the Central Market towards Minden Place.

The St Helier Roads Committee made the decision to help ease the gridlock around Minden Place and Bath Street at peak traffic times.

But traders have expressed concern at the decision, saying it will mean the town centre will be used as a rat run.

Situation monitored

For the next 12 months, motorists will be able to turn right down Cattle Street from Burrard Street.

But many traders in the market and along nearby roads say the alteration will have little effect and may encourage people to use the centre of town as a rat-run.

Officials insist the change is right and deny it is a U-turn following the reversal of traffic in Halkett Place seven months ago.

Town Constable Simon Crowcroft said traders were asked for their opinions before the change, but added that the effect it had on them would be closely monitored.

He said: "The parish did consult before it took action. We did a survey and sent letters to all traders and residents to get their views. We only got one letter for either view.

"Subsequently to that, telecoms have got in contact with us about some operational difficulties they face, and we will look into those."
