Parents get more tax relief for children who are college students |
Parents in Jersey with children over the age of 17 who are still in full-time education could get 5,000 taken off their income tax bills. At the moment, parents with children who are still at school get 2,500 taken off their tax bill, while parents whose children are at a university or college have 5,000 taken off.
This means children at a secondary school such as Hautlieu do not get the same amount as youngsters at Highlands College.
But now a proposal is being put to the States by the deputy of St Martin, Bob Hill, who said he thought the present law was unfair.
Deputy Hill said the current law did not encourage young people to stay in education.
Although if introduced, the plans would cost the island's Income Tax department more than 250,000, Deputy Hill said the additional cost was acceptable in the interest of equality.
