New school for island
States members have voted in favour of building a new primary school in Jersey's La Pouquelaye area.

The plan to build the 6.5m school for up to 350 children on the La Pouquelaye playing fields was approved by States members on Tuesday.

The new school will be called D'Auvergne and will combine pupils from both the La Pouquelaye and St Mark's schools along with children from the waterfront area.

It is thought the new school, which may open in September 2005, will also allow for safer pick-up and drop-off point for parents.

Although no votes were cast against the new development, Deputy Jackie Huet said she was concerned about extra traffic in the area.

The new building could be constructed in a similar style to the Grand Vaux school, utilising traditional techniques and materials.
