St Mark's School may close and join with the new La Pouquelaye School in two years' time.

Senator Mike Vibert, the politician responsible for education, says the scheme will save thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money.

There are plans for a new primary school to replace the former La Pouquelaye School and which is expected to open in September 2005.

Modern amenities

St Mark's pupils and teachers could transfer to the new school, although parents will be allowed the choice of sending their children to other schools.

The new school would also take children who live on the waterfront.

The demand for more schools is expected to fall over the next decade, with experts predicting a reduction in the number of primary school-aged children.

Senator Vibert says the merger will enable more children to benefit from a school with modern, high-quality amenities.
