Speed limits could be reduced

More than 200 drivers were caught speeding outside schools
Speed limits outside schools in Jersey could be lowered to 20 mph under new proposals.

A working group is looking at revising the policy on speed limits in the island.

More than 200 drivers were caught by police breaking speed limits outside schools last September in a three-day campaign to mark the start of the new school year.

There have been several proposals for speed limits in the past few years, including calls for lower speed limits through built-up residential areas.

Electronic signs

A 20 mph limit was introduced in St Peter's village, but that is unlikely to be adopted around the rest of the island.

A working group decided the 30 mph speed limit on main roads through villages would be a more appropriate speed.

But a 20 mph speed limit outside schools could be enforced more strongly with the introduction of part-time electronic signs which will flash up drivers' speeds during school opening and closing times.

The group says drivers often fail to notice they are in a 20 mph zone.
