Racers understand the risks involved, it is claimed |
A TT races commentator has said the sixth death in this year's Manx Grand Prix will mean negative publicity for the Isle of Man. Charles Lambert said it had not been a good year regarding fatal accidents and other serious accidents.
He was speaking after Don Leeson, 57, died on Friday morning when he lost control of his Honda at Quarry Bends during the Ultra Lightweight race.
Mr Leeson, of north Wales, had competed seven times previously in the race.
'Every precaution'
The Manx Motorcycle Club, which organises the grand prix, offered its sympathy to his family and friends.
While admitting that the deaths were bad publicity for the island, Mr Lambert said contestants understood the risks involved.
He said: "I wouldn't like anyone to come along and tell me that I can't do it.
"If I choose to do it and I'm not harming anybody but myself if things go wrong then why not?
"The same is true at the top end of the scale - we're talking about fantastic riders with great machinery here - and if they want to race and they know what the risks are and every precaution is taken then let them race."
