Farmers welcome milk announcement

Moves to open up the distribution of milk products in Guernsey are being welcomed by the island's farmers.

The Commerce & Employment Department, which runs the dairy, has succeeded in getting the go-ahead for changes to the milk deliverers' licences.

It means they no longer have exclusive rights to deliver butter, cream and cheese to commercial customers.

Guernsey's Milk Retailers Association says it will take time to consider the implications of this week's decision.

Milk deliverers' right to sell products such as cheese and cream to private island households will be protected by law.
