Milk wholesale campaign defeated

Guernsey's milk deliverers have lost a campaign to have exclusive rights to deliver milk by-products to businesses.

Their right to sell products such as cheese and cream to island households will be protected by law.

However, after a two-day States debate, and to stimulate competition, deliverers will not have similar rights for wholesaling to hotels and shops.

The Commerce and Employment Department is now drawing up licences for milk retailers to reflect this.

During the States debate, deputies agreed there should be a review of the whole diary industry in five to seven years' time.
