A poor response to a telephone hotline set up in Guernsey to gauge the enthusiasm of islanders for recycling is being played down. The hotline was set up as part of the Big Recycle Week, but only 78 calls were taken, with 38 people pledging to recycle more.
There has been criticism from islanders that there was not enough publicity.
Environment officer Steve Smith rejected the complain, but is concerned it could indicate complacency.

He said: "What it might reflect is that people are already doing what they can and if that is the case that is extremely worrying.
"Although Guernsey is doing extremely well compared to other UK authorities, we need to do more, so we do need to convince people there is more they can do and we need to put in place initiatives to help them to do more."
He said the hotline number was widely publicised.
"The information is there if people want it.
"We have done a lot in recent weeks and months to improve the information on what is available in recycling.
"Anyone who looks at their telephone book will see in the front pages a full list of the recycling initiatives that are available."
The recycling pledgline is still open on 0800 7351122.
