Group calls for major tax rethink
Environmental group Friends of the Earth is calling for a major rethink of Guernsey's tax system, including abolishing income tax.

Its proposals aim to penalise activities which harm the economy and the environment instead.

It believes money would be better raised by taxing fuel and environmentally unfriendly activities.

Guernsey is currently facing a multi-million pound budget shortfall, and is planning to cut corporation tax.

The moves are seen as an attempt to keep the island's finance industry.

The environmental group claims figures show the states currently generates more than 80% of its revenue from income tax, compared to just 55% in Europe.

It believes its proposals would lead to the eventual abolition of income tax.
