More than 300,000 is to be spent in Guernsey to fund a more "civilised" response to its hardened alcoholics. Health Minister Deputy Peter Roffey announced that he intended to spend the money developing a "wet house" at St Julian's House.
Unlike a so-called "dry house" which caters for recovering alcoholics, the facility would be for people who probably would not beat an addiction.
He said it would be for those in need of special care.
Mr Roffey said: "The reality that any community has to face is that there will be a hardcore of recidivist drinkers who are completely controlled by their addiction.
"I think we have to have a civilised response to those circumstances. While offering the treatment and alternatives, we will be able to accommodate them in a civilised way if they choose not take advantage of that."
