 Landlords face a tax to curb binge drinking |
Plans to increase the price of liquor licences five fold has caused anger among Guernsey's publicans. The States proposal, which could see permits rise from �150 to �750 per year, is to pay for the policing of binge drinkers.
President of the Licensed Victuallers Association (GLVA), Cindy de Jersey, wants venues to fight the plans.
She says the suggested increase is excessive and the onus should not be on licensees but the drinkers themselves.
Mrs de Jersey, speaking at GLVA's annual dinner on Tuesday, denied all responsibility for alcohol-fuelled trouble in St Peter Port rests with the island's licensees.
She is concerned the extra levy will also be used to pay for tackling drug problems, for which her members should not be liable.
