Underage drinking worries landlords
Teenager and bottle
Landlords want parents to be more concerned about their children
Licensees in Guernsey are deeply concerned by the extent of underage drinking in the island.

It follows claims by two teenage girls on BBC Radio Guernsey that it is easy for them to buy alcohol in pubs and clubs.

The youngsters, who want to remain anonymous, said moves to curb publicans selling drinks to under-18s were not working, that they and their friends regularly drank in town and were rarely being asked for identification.

Members of the island's Licensed Victuallers Association want parents to show more concern about the drinking habits of their children.

Association President Cindy de Jersey said more parents seemed to be finding it acceptable that their youngsters were going drinking in pubs.

The president of the Home Affairs Committee, Deputy Mike Torode, has already warned landlords they will be forced to take more responsibility if underage people are on their premises once changes to the law come into effect this year.

He has warned they risk losing their livelihood if they do not take greater responsibility.

But he also said he believed the underage drinking scheme in force had the support of the majority of landlords.
