Various schemes have been tried to solve the problem |
Wristbands are being introduced in a Derbyshire town to tackle the problem of under age drinking. Pubs in Ripley will issue the numbered bands to under 21s who can prove their age.
It is hoped the scheme will mean under 18s stay away from the 13 establishments involved and over 18s will not feel victimised.
Underage drinking has been associated with acts of anti-social behaviour and vandalism in the area.
Foreign advice
Peter Clay, chairman of Ripley Pubwatch, said it is a proactive response by licensees and the police.
He said: "What we are trying to do is get hold of underage drinking and anti-social behaviour problems associated with it.
"Several other initiatives have been tried and none have really worked.
"So what we have done is pick brains in various cities, both at home and abroad where we have looked at underage drinking problems.
Group action
"What we have done is come up with a practical scheme with the wristbands."
Helen Grattan of the Thorn Tree pub in Ripley Market Place is one of those welcoming the move.
She said: "It's going to help on a number of levels. I've had trouble with children trying to get served so its going to help us see who is old enough.
"Hopefully people who don't come in for a drink at the moment will feel the town is a more attractive place.
"And any scheme is always going to be more effective if everyone is taking part rather than just one pub trying on its own."
The project is to run for the next four weeks.
