Residents air school road worries
Classroom
If approved, the school is expected to open in 2007
Twenty residents of a Guernsey parish attended a public meeting on Wednesday night to air their concerns about a new school complex in Guernsey.

Residents are worried about safety and congestion in the narrow roads around Les Nicolles.

Education Minister Deputy Martin Ozanne assured residents their concerns were being taken into account.

If the States gives the final go-ahead, building on the 47m project will start in the summer.

If approved, it will join Les Effards with Baubigny and include some traffic-calming measures along nearby roads.

Some residents are alarmed because they fear the roads are not suitable for any increase in traffic.

Deputy Ozanne said: "The fact that not many people were there must give an indication that people understand we are trying to tackle these issues and the majority of the problems we foresee will be overcome."

The project to build the new 720-pupil Les Nicolles School will cost about 50m and should be open in 2007.

It will replace St Sampson's secondary, and help prepare for the redrafting of catchment areas when St Peter Port School closes.

A special needs school will be built at the same site for Mont Varouf and Oakdale pupils.
