Rise in tipping charges proposed

The panel said the proposed waste plant was too big
A review of Guernsey's waste strategy has concluded that higher tipping charges would greatly increase the level of recycling in the island.

The report, which also recommended that plans to build an incinerator at Long Hougue are scrapped, is calling for charges to be increased immediately.

It says charges at the Mont Cuet landfill site should be increased from about 60 a tonne to over 100.

The report say the move would encourage more recycling in the island.

The independent panel was set up six months ago to review the plans for the incinerator at Long Hougue in St Sampson's after Deputy Scott Ogier successfully persuaded the States to take a second look at the project.

The panel concluded the proposed 80m plant was too big, would have a huge visual impact and would cost more than similar plants elsewhere.

It recommended the States look at other options and consider exporting some of its rubbish in the meantime.

The environment department has two months to consider the findings of the panel.
