Health board claim criticised
Princess Elizabeth Hospital, Guernsey
The hospital is to get a fourth operating theatre
A Guernsey politician has accused the Board of Health of using a fatal accident to justify its position over hospital expansion.

One teenager was killed and four more were seriously hurt in the car accident, which occurred early on Saturday morning.

Deputy Hunter Adam said the board had tried to make political capital from the incident, which he described as "unfortunate".

The States rejected a sursis from Deputy Adam opposing plans to create a fourth operating theatre at Princess Elizabeth Hospital at the beginning of November.

Overstepping mark

On Monday, the Board of Health issued a statement praising the efforts of staff dealing with the car accident saying the incident proved suggestions the hospital did not need extra theatre and critical care resources were "nonsense".

Deputy Adam said he backed the praise for hospital staff and would extend that to the emergency services involved.

But he said the Board was using the incident to justify its success in the recent States debate on the expansion of hospital.

He said it "oversteps the mark".

But Deputy Peter Roffey says the main aim of the statement was to praise staff and denies it was inappropriate.
