Airlines ready for fares war
Flybe
Flybe aims to undercut existing operators
A third airline is stepping into the battle for inter-island flyers.

Flybe has announced that it is to apply for a route licence between Jersey and Guernsey.

The move follows the announcement that Rockhopper is offering up to eight flights a day between Jersey and Guernsey from 22 September.

The flights have until recently been monopolised by Guernsey States-owned Aurigny.

We live in an era of competition
Ian Taylor, Flybe

Rockhopper is offering return flights costing about 50.

But Ian Taylor, Flybe's general manager in Jersey, told BBC News Online: "We live in an era of competition.

"There is an opportunity for significantly lower fares than that."

Flybe already offers a twice-a-day standby service between the islands, but wants to offer a bookable service.

Flybe's application will be considered by Jersey's Economic Development Committee and Guernsey's Transport Board.

The airline is also hoping to run flights from Manchester.

Flybe is also in competition with Aurigny for flights from Southampton to Jersey, a route which is being dropped by British Airways next month.
