Breakwater plan opposed
Protest on Alderney Breakwater
Plans to shorten the breakwater have proved highly controversial
Alderney States members do not approve of the plans for the future of the island's breakwater.

After two hours of discussion at the States meeting, members went to the vote, after an amendment brought forward by Chris Main.

Originally the plans were to be noted, but Mr Main wanted the members to go to the vote to indicate to Guernsey whether or not they approved of the plans.

Although there was a majority of five to four against the plans, fears were also expressed that it may collapse if the structure did not get the attention it needed.

The plans to shorten Alderney's breakwater by 125 metres and build a spur on its inner length are being presented to Guernsey States members later this month as the preferred option.

But they have proved highly controversial and several protests have been made against the plans.

Other items on the agenda were health and safety legislation at work, which was passed and will apply to all companies regardless of size.

Sea fish licensing was also passed to bring the island into line with UK and EU regulations.
