500 protest over breakwater
Alderney breakwater
Islanders were invited to sign a banner
Islanders in Alderney fear the island's breakwater could collapse into the sea unless urgent action is taken.

A decision is still to be reached on the future of the sea wall, which islanders say is deteriorating quickly.

500 residents turned out to support the save the Alderney Breakwater Campaign on Sunday.

Organiser Barbara Benfield says something needs to be done now

Strong feelings

"We want the breakwater maintained as it is now.

"We don't want the Board of Administration to let any part of the breakwater fall into disrepair.

"We have probably got half the electoral role here, which shows just how strongly people feel," she said.

Islanders were invited to sign a banner hanging from the breakwater which organisers plan to send to Guernsey as a petition.

States member Nigel Roberts says he hopes the campaign to highlight the critical state of the wall will force Guernsey to take action.

"I think it can send a message to the States of Guernsey that the people of Alderney want to see the breakwater retained in its entirety."
