A Bailiwick airport should become an island gateway, rather than looking like a collection of cabins, according to a States member.

Captain Ralph Burridge's appeal over Alderney Airport has come after both airlines operating in and out of the island reported passenger increases.

Latest figures have revealed a 48% increase in private aviation in Alderney for the first four months of the year, as well as more passengers for both Aurigny and LeCocqs.

But despite the figures, Captain Burridge has said the airport needs rejuvenating as it is the first and last impression on those travelling to and from the island.

Strategic approach

Captain Burridge puts Alderney's tourism success down to a niche marketing campaign which has recently won a national award.

London and Thames Today magazine awarded Alderney its "Today Business Achievement Award" for 2003.

Alderney tourism's marketing manager, Ilona Soane-Sands, said the accolade could lead to a big summer boost in business.

Tourism businesses on the island are hoping the upward trend will continue with a fly-in next month and the Alderney Air Races in September.

However, Captain Burridge has called for a more strategic approach to building new infrastructure for Alderney - starting with the demolition of what he calls a "third-rate" airport building.

Alderney's Chamber of Commerce has also said that passenger facilities on the island were "just not good enough".
