Breakwater plans opposed
Protest on Alderney Breakwater
Protests have been carried out to maintain the breakwater as it is
Residents of Alderney have voiced their opposition to shortening the Victorian breakwater.

The thorny issue of what should happen to the breakwater should come to an end when the States meet later this month.

In an effort to explain exactly what is planned, members of the Board of Administration held a public meeting to answer people's questions.

The Board wants to knock down 125 metres of the breakwater and offer a spur further along.

Bay fears

It says the 29m scheme would ensure current moorings and boost trade for the island with commercial developments near the breakwater.

But residents want a 30m plan to maintain the breakwater as it is.

They say that shortening the breakwater could adversely affect Bray Bay.

An exhibition of the proposals, being held in La Boutique on Alderney's Victoria Street, is open daily for two hours until 19 July.
