Breakwater protest organiser charged
Alderney breakwater
Protesters say the breakwater is in danger of collapsing into the sea
The organiser of the 'Save the Alderney Breakwater' protest has been charged with causing criminal damage.

Barbara Benfield is charged with damaging the breakwater on two occasions earlier this month.

She is charged with causing reckless criminal damage to the breakwater sometime between 1830 BST on 6 May and 0730 BST on 7 May, and also at about 2200 BST on 10 May.

The trial will take place in the Court of Alderney on 5 June.

Over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, nearly 500 Alderney residents demonstrated in favour of retaining the 150-year-old breakwater.

A decision is still to be reached on the future of the sea wall, but islanders say it is deteriorating quickly and fear it could collapse into the sea unless urgent action is taken.
