Protests have been carried out to maintain the breakwater as it is |
An Alderney politician is hoping the strength of opinion in the island regarding the breakwater will be taken into account by Guernsey's States when the future of the landmark is decided. Chris Main has tabled an amendment which calls for Alderney's States to vote on the matter, and for the result of that vote to be considered by Guernsey's politicians during the breakwater debate later this month.
Feelings are running high over whether the Victorian structure should be shortened, a move some say is not needed.
But Mr Main said the priority should be to come up with the best decision for Alderney.
He said: "I still think we have to work together on this one and sort out the best final solution.
"What is on the table at the moment is not the best solution because, while it may have its merits with regard to protection for the Bray harbour area, it does not do anything to protect the area that it has protected in the past."
