Guernsey has a greater problem with alcohol dependency than the UK, according to an island doctor. Guernsey's director of Public Health, Dr David Jeffs, said the treatment of alcoholism was already a high priority in the island.

But Dr Jeffs said Guernsey was aware of the problem and the Board of Health was using its resources to tackle it.
Higher rates
"If we look at the number of people per a 100,000 population said to have died from alcohol-related diseases, Guernsey's rates are about 40% higher than Britain.
"On the evidence we have got, alcohol dependency is probably a greater problem in Guernsey than in Britain."
Dr Jeffs added: "If people developed an alcohol problem for a single reason, then we could look at a simple, single solution.
"But it is because it is such a complex problem - that different people become dependent at different dosages - that we need a variety of responses so we can help them get more control of their lives."
