Churchman bemoans licensing laws move
Drinking beer
All-day drinking will now be allowed on a Sunday in Guernsey
Extra drinking time in Guernsey's pubs is a sad move, according to an island churchman.

Islanders will now be able to drink into the small hours seven days a week as pubs have been given permission to stay open until 0045 GMT.

But Roy Sarre, who is vice-chairman of the Guernsey Council for Churches, says changes to licensing laws are unwise.

Negative response

Over-indulgence in alcohol is already a concern on the island and he thinks the extra hour each night and all-day drinking on a Sunday will only add to the problem.

He thinks it will receive a general negative response from church members and will not particularly enhance Guernsey.

"We have heard so much from Guernsey's chief of police, Mike Wyeth, over his anxiety about crimes being so much related to drink, and the problems of under-age drinking.

"It has caused so many problems over the years that I don't think liberalisation of the drinking laws is going in the right direction," said Mr Sarre.
