Licensees welcome historic decision
Public bar
All-day drinking will be now permitted on a Sunday
The vice president of Guernsey's Licensed Victuallers Association has welcomed an historic decision by the States to change licensing laws.

Suzanne Pontin said Wednesday's decision gives licensees more choice.

Islanders will now be able to drink into the small hours seven days a week as pubs will now be able to stay open until 0045 GMT.

All-day drinking on a Sunday is the other major change in a shake-up of the current laws.

I think it's good to see our States members bringing Guernsey into the 21st Century
Suzanne Pontin, Licensed Victuallers Association

Speaking in the States on Wednesday Deputy Peter Bougourd said the time for change had come.

"Licensees now have the choice to open in a way that suits their own establishment," said Ms Pontin.

"And Sunday opening is what the LVA is most pleased about as that is something we have fought for for a long time now."

An amendment, brought by Deputy Roger Berry, which sought to provide a final opportunity for States members to maintain the status quo was defeated.
