Call for longer club hours
Boy George

Nightclubs in Guernsey could serve alcohol until 0245, if an amendment from a Deputy is successful.

John Gollop is proposing the extension in response to calls from the Guernsey Licensed Victuallers for pubs to be licensed for an extra hour.

At the moment closing time for clubs is 0145.

Deputy Gollop has said it makes sense to focus on developing entertainment which could benefit tourism.

It would lessen problems at the taxi rank and maybe make things easier for the police

He said: "There's a serious threat of another nightclub closure, and it's time the States started to represent young adults better, and move into the new millennium."

He believes his proposals, if passed, would allow nightclub-goers to pace their drinking and perhaps sober up before leaving the club.

He said: "In reality, if the hours are extended, as we've seen in Scotland and other places around Europe, people would pace their drinking more.

"Some would go home at 0200, some at 0215, some at 0230 and some at 0245.

"It would lessen problems at the taxi rank and maybe make things easier for the police force."

He also said he believed the quality of entertainment would improve on the island.

He said: "The clubs attract more glamorous visitors and more entertainment, with DJs and alternative DJs.

"Boy George, one of the 100 Greatest Britons, was a guest DJ recently and I do not see the logic in reducing the clubs' commercial appeal."

Some landlords have said they do not wish to take advantage of any changed licensing laws if the hours they are allowed to stay open for are increased.
