Landlords told to be vigilant

Drinkers have been told they need to respect the town
Pub landlords are hoping to make St Peter Port a safer place.

Licensees in the town are putting tougher measures in place in an effort to cut down on violence in pubs.

The president of Guernsey's Licensed Victuallers Association and the licensee of the Bankers Draft pub, Suzanne Pontin, says licensees need to remain vigilant to try and stop the problem.

Mrs Pontin and police have said landlords can become stricter on who can enter their establishments to control any trouble.

She said: "Guernsey is a special place and people need to respect this when they're drinking in town."

Mrs Pontin said a general police presence around the town has helped to cut down violence in licensed premises.

"Just having a police van parked nearby helps because it prevents things from happening," she said.

Clubs in the town are also working on building up a stronger relationship with police officers who are regularly on the beat around drinking establishments.

Co-ordinated approach

"There are police that patrol town at night, and some doormen are directly linked to police officers by mobile phone," said Matt Bertwhistle, the head doorman at the Follies nightclub.

"The police make us aware of people that have caused trouble in other areas that are out and about."

Guernsey Police said: "We endeavour to have a co-ordinated approach with landlords.

"It is a constant issue and we encourage licensees to stop serving drink to anyone who may be about to cause problems and to not let known troublemakers in."
