'Trams would beat jams'

Croydon trams have been praised
Plans for trams along Jersey's south west coast are being backed by the Constable of St Helier.

John Trafford, a former Croydon tram driver, came up with the idea.

He claims a tram route would reduce traffic jams in parts of the island.

Mr Trafford has been given qualified support from Constable Simon Crowcroft but former States member and ex-Waterfront Enterprise Board chairman Don Filleul thinks it is a non-starter.

Air quality

Mr Trafford claims trams have revolutionised public transport in many parts of the UK.

He now works as a local Tantivy coach driver and said it would be feasible for a tram route to be built along Victoria Avenue, which would greatly reduce traffic congestion from the west of the island.

He said knock-on effects would include improved air quality and a faster commuter service for travellers.
