Animated movie Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs has topped the UK and Ireland box office, pummelling gangster movie Public Enemies into second place.

The third Ice Age film took £7.64m on its opening weekend while Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp, debuted with £2.23m.

The new number one ended the two-week reign of Transformers at the top - this week's number three took £2.21m.

The only other top 10 new entry was Bollywood film Kambakkht Ishq at seven.

The film, featuring cameos from Sylvester Stallone and Denise Richards, took £299,533.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, the latest in a series of adventures about a woolly mammoth and his friends, is voiced by stars including Denis Leary, Queen Latifah and Ray Romano - star of US sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.

Public Enemies, which also stars Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard, tells the true story of 1930s bank robber John Dillinger.

Comedy The Hangover, which tells the tale of a wild Las Vegas bachelor party, dropped from two to four, taking £1.52m.

Rounding out the top five was drama My Sister's Keeper, starring Cameron Diaz, which took £762,061.
