The Hangover wakes up in top slot

The Hangover tells the story of a bachelor party gone comically awry

Comedy movie The Hangover has gone straight to the top of the UK and Ireland film box office, official figures have confirmed.

The movie, revolving around a drink-fuelled Las Vegas bachelor party, took £2.7m in its opening weekend.

Last week's number one - Christian Bale's Terminator Salvation - fell to second place.

New release The Last House On The Left went to number seven, while Looking For Eric debuted in eighth place.

Looking for Eric tells the story of a football mad postman, played by Steve Evets, who starts to take advice from his hero Eric Cantona in hallucinations. Cantona stars as himself in the film.

Emma Thompson's latest movie, Last Chance Harvey, which also stars Dustin Hoffman, fell three places to nine.

Animation Coraline, which features the voices of Teri Hatcher and Dakota Fanning, rounded off the top 10.
