About 2.8m people born in Wales were living in Britain at the 2001 census unsurprisingly 78% of them in Wales itself. The areas of England with the highest numbers of people born in Wales tend to be closest to the Welsh border - Shropshire, Cheshire and so on. Some areas of Wales have seen steep decreases in the numbers of Wales-born particularly the heavy industry Valleys which have suffered economically for more than 20 years. Scotland and the North East have the fewest Wales-born residents in Britain, although both regions have seen increases. | | Concentrations of people born in Wales Map on right shows country as if areas with roughly equal populations were the same size. So, densely populated London takes up much more space than sparsely populated Scottish Highlands. |
