Overview

Since Sweden joined the European Union in 1995 (at the same time as some of its Nordic neighbours and Austria), its citizens have been able to freely seek work in Britain under free market rules.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the numbers arriving from Sweden doubled in the 10 years to 2001.

Some 22,000 Sweden-born people comprise one of the smallest EU groups in the UK, with the vast majority found in London or the South East.

Areas registering clusters in London indicated that most were in well-paid business or professional posts. Some other areas of the country did not register anyone born in Sweden at all.

Map on right shows country as if areas with roughly equal populations were the same size. So, densely populated London takes up much more space than sparsely populated Scottish Highlands.

22,366 people born in Sweden were living in Britain when the 2001 Census was taken. 3 areas of London have more than 500 people born in Sweden living locally: Richmond North, Hyde Park and Kensington. 227 of the 1,282 national areas used for these maps registered nobody at all born in Sweden. 50 fewer people born in Sweden lived in Walton (Surrey) in 2001 than in 1991.
