Overview

South Americans in Britain are one of the growth stories of modern immigration.

76,000 people born on the continent were in Britain at the time of the 2001 Census � up from 34,000 ten years earlier. Anecdotally, the biggest growth has been in Brazilians, particularly in service industries.

Some 5,000 South America-born people live in south London areas known for their Portuguese and Spanish communities.

The South America category comprises Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Falkland Islands, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.

76,412 people born in South America were living in Britain at the 2001 Census � up 121% on 1991. 0.13% of the British population came from South America, compared with 0.06% in 1991. 1,986 South America-born people resident in the East Midlands represented the second largest regional increase of more than 100%. 0.62% of London's population was born in South America.
