The 2001 Census was the first to collect data on people who described themselves as born in North Africa principally Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia.
The Census also included the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla (all Spanish territories) in this group, along with the former Portuguese colony of Cape Verde off the African west coast.
However, most of those in Britain from the North Africa-born group will be from the north African Arab countries. Their distribution predominantly in London matches that of other Arab communities in the capital.
