Overview

The 2001 Census counted people from the former Yugoslavia's successor republics together.

The majority of the growth was driven by the political breakdowns and Balkan wars � in particular the conflicts in Bosnia and Kosovo.

As with most refugee communities, the over-whelming majority of these people came to and stayed in London. Some 25,000 were living in the capital in 2001, half of all ex-Yugoslavians in Britain.

The areas which saw the greatest numbers of new arrivals were Tottenham and Golders Green in north London.

Map on right shows country as if areas with roughly equal populations were the same size. So, densely populated London takes up much more space than sparsely populated Scottish Highlands.

47,410 people born in the former Yugoslavia were found by the Census to be living in Britain in 2001. 53% of ex-Yugoslavia-born people in Britain have made their home in London. 0.08% of people in Britain in 2001 were born in the former Yugoslavia. 20 areas outside London have ex-Yugoslavia-born populations ranging from 100 to 400 people.
