Ex-USSR

Overview

Figures for people born in Russia and the former USSR states are among the most complicated. The 1991 Census recorded USSR-born people because it was compiled before the collapse of communism. The 2001 Census counted people in various different ways.

In general however, the numbers born in the former USSR went up by 16,000 to about 43,000 in the 10 years to 2001.

About 3,500 of these were born in the Asian territories of the communist block, more than 10,000 in the Baltic states and the vast majority in "European USSR" meaning predominantly Russia, Ukraine and so on.

Concentrations of people born in Ex-USSR

Map on right shows country as if areas with roughly equal populations were the same size. So, densely populated London takes up much more space than sparsely populated Scottish Highlands.

At-a-glance

43,182 people born in the former USSR were living in Britain at the 2001 Census, about a third up on 1991.

35% of them were recorded as living in London, mirroring the trend among all immigrant groups.

2,100 USSR-born people in west Yorkshire represent communities who got out of the Soviet bloc during or immediately after the World War II.

2 university areas � Oxford and Cambridge � recorded relatively large increases of more than 600 over the 10 years from 1991.
