Of the 43.9m people identified in the 2001 Census as born in England and resident in Britain, 42.9m live in England itself. About 400,000 are in Scotland and 590,000 in Wales. In national terms, the number of people born in England has gone up. But as a proportion of the total population, the percentage has decreased slightly, reflecting the increasing significance of immigration from abroad. One area of Scotland Edinburgh Morningside has more than 10,400 people living there who were born in England. A further 20 areas of Wales have more than 10,000 England-born people apiece. | | Concentrations of people born in England Map on right shows country as if areas with roughly equal populations were the same size. So, densely populated London takes up much more space than sparsely populated Scottish Highlands. |
